The Marangu Route is the oldest and most popular route for ascending Mount Kilimanjaro, often referred to as the “Coca-Cola” route due to its relative ease compared to other routes. It is the only route that offers hut accommodations for trekkers, making it a convenient choice during the rainy season. While the route is easier in terms of elevation gain, it still requires significant preparation.
This 6-day Marangu trek is shorter than other routes, but it is recommended to consider an extra acclimatization day to increase the chances of reaching the summit successfully. This route has the least scenic variety since it shares the same trail for both ascent and descent. However, for those seeking a shorter trek with basic hut facilities, this is a great option.
After breakfast, travel to Marangu Gate for the official start of your trek. Begin your journey through the dense rainforest, where you might spot monkeys and other wildlife. Once you reach Mandara Hut, you’ll have the opportunity to rest. In the afternoon, visit Maundi Crater for incredible views of Kenya.
Leave Mandara Hut and ascend into the moorland zone. As you approach Horombo Hut, enjoy panoramic views of Mawenzi Peak and Kibo Peak. The trek is long but rewarding with breathtaking scenery.
Today, take a short acclimatization trek to Zebra Rocks (4020m), named for the distinctive black and white stripes on the rocks. This acclimatization day is essential for preparing your body for the summit. Return to Horombo Hut for a warm lunch and relaxation.
Begin your ascent to Kibo Hut, located at 4700m. The saddle is a barren, rocky area that connects Kibo Peak and Mawenzi Peak. The terrain becomes more rugged and windswept as you approach Kibo Hut, where you’ll rest and prepare for the summit.
Summit Day: You will start your ascent to the summit (Uhuru Peak) around midnight, traversing through the glaciers and snow to reach Stella Point at 5681m. From here, continue to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. After celebrating your achievement, descend back to Kibo Hut for a brief rest, then continue to Horombo Hut.
Descend through the moorland and rainforest to Marangu Gate. Upon arrival, receive your summit certificate for reaching Uhuru Peak. After saying your goodbyes to the mountain guides, you’ll transfer back to your hotel in Moshi.
